Try this:

Start up iTunes and enable the 'Enable Disk Use' option.

When your iPod shows up as a drive letter in Explorer, run Disk Defragmenter on your iPod drive.
After the defrag completes, go back to iTunes and disable the 'Enable Disk Use' option.

Less work for the iPod's hard disk to do when loading mp3's,
More battery available for play time.
